Cooking Healthy Meals on a Budget: Basic Cooking Class

Did you know that you can eat healthier and much cheaper by making your food from scratch? Taught by an ISD teacher and mother of six children who has had a lot of practice at cooking. This class will instruct participants on how to: read a recipe, make the base for stews, soups, and sauces, grate/chop/dice/slice, and sauté. Healthy ingredient substitutions will also be discussed/used for some recipes. Enjoy the results of your new cooking expertise at the end of each class. Please bring a container to take home leftovers. Sign up for one session or both. 

Session 1 (6 weeks) Meals
-February 5th: Macaroni and Cheese—Learn to make healthy cheese sauce
-February 12th: Chicken Soup—Learn to make a healthy soup with a mirepoix base
-February 19th: Chile con Carne—Learn to season and layer the flavors while you practice your mirepoix and sautéing skills to make a healthy chili
-February 26th: Fajitas and Guacamole—Learn to make your own Mexican seasoning and how to stir fry vegetables and meat for a healthy quick meal
-March 6th (Wednesday): Spaghetti and Meat Sauce—Learn to make a healthy meat sauce base for tomato or savory dishes
-March 12th: Stir Fried Veggies, Chicken, and Rice—Learn to chop, slice, and stir fry veggies and boil rice for a quick and easy healthy meal 

Session 2 (6 weeks) Meals

April 3rd: Deviled Eggs—Learn to boil the perfect egg and make your own healthy mayonnaise
-April 10th: Roasted Potatoes and Other Veggies—Learn to make healthy, yummy, come back for more, roasted veggies
-April 17th: Biscuits and Gravy with Bacon—Learn to make biscuits and a roux base that is essential to all sauces and gravies
-April 24th: Green Salads and Homemade Dressings—Learn to make your own healthy dressings and variations of the humble green salad
-May 1st: Brownies—No more need to buy a mix when you see how easy it is to make them with healthy ingredients from scratch
-May 8th: Granola—It’s so easy to fall in love with this easy to make healthy breakfast or snack food.
